Should all schools be required to teach cursive?
It’s becoming an ongoing debate around around the country again after Governor of Ohio recently signed a bill into law making students legally required to learn cursive.
The law dictates students must be able to print letters and works legibly by third grade must be able to write in cursive by the end of fifth grade.
Cursive will need to become a part of the curriculum by July 1.
Sponsors of the bill say cursive writing has been found by several associations and institutions that deal with challenges such as dyslexia to be extremely helpful in supporting focus, learning patterns, memory, and spelling.
Some people on social media feel it’s a waste of time to teach it as several adults say they haven’t used this form of handwriting since grade school.
Studies have shown that the brain learns better when there is constant movement from the hand, rather than the hand having to be lifted after every pen stroke, according to supporters of the bill.
Sponsors day some documents in day-to-day life are still in cursive, and the next generation will require the skills to understand them.
